The South East Alberta FASD Network is a non-profit organization offering community-based, cost-free services to persons impacted by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and their caregivers. We are part of a system- wide FASD Network model that has made Alberta a leader in service delivery, both in Canada and internationally. We offer education, prevention, assessment and diagnosis, outreach, and restorative justice support services. We are seeking to fill a 35-hour per week FASD In Reach Transition Mentor (FASD Transition Mentor) role in the Medicine Hat Remand Centre.

The entire amount of this contract is $ 108,800.00 and includes program delivery, resources dollars, travel and subsistence, training, workshops and cell phone allowance from June 20, 2025 – July 31, 2026 (approx. 14 months).

Position Summary

The FASD Transition Mentors will provide education, information, and one-to-one support to clients impacted, or potentially impacted, by FASD, and residing at the Medicine Hat Remand Centre. Additionally, the role will offer clients/offenders transitional support to community or other applicable addictions and mental health resources and facilitate the FASD assessment and diagnosis process for eligible clients/offenders within the Medicine Hat Remand Centre.

Summary of Duties based on Restorative Justice Practices:
  1. Weekly FASD education sessions.
  2. One-to-one support for clients/offenders being released from Medicine Hat Remand Centre and diagnosed or potentially impacted by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
  3. Connection to resources in the community of release e.g. housing, financial, personal identification, mental health and addictions support, connection to healthy personal/familial contacts.
  4. Support through the South East Alberta FASD Diagnostic Clinic (Bridges Family Programs) including acquiring Prenatal Alcohol Exposure confirmation (PAE), intake and information gathering and documentation.
  5. Facilitation of Restorative Justice Conferencing and/or Peacemaking Circles if applicable.
  6. Facilitate FASD training to Remand Staff and community supports to increase their FASD capacity- – these sessions will be provided in conjunction with the current SEAFAN educators and facilitators.
  7. Actively seek out community resources and build community support resource base.
  8. Working within the Towards Healthy Outcomes framework.
  9. Collect and enter data for In Reach evaluation.
Education and Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in justice, social work, social science, or related field and/or comparable experience with justice, FASD, disabilities, mental health, addictions.
  • Minimum of 3 years work experience in justice, or above related field.
  • Knowledge regarding disabilities, mental health, and addictions.
  • Demonstrate in-depth level of knowledge of FASD and experience working in the disability sector.
  • Public Speaking experience and ability.
  • Ability and confidence to work alone with vulnerable populations with little supervision.
  • Ability and comfort transporting individuals who are justice involved.
  • A reliable vehicle, valid driver’s license, driver’s abstract, $2,000,000 liability insurance.
  • Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Population Criminal Record & Child Welfare checks are standard for this position.
  • Ability to work a flexible 35.0 hour per week with scheduling based on needs of the client population served. Some evenings and weekends are expected.
