By identifying individuals impacted by FASD, providing assessment and diagnosis services, and subsequently utilizing the diagnosis to inform the restorative practice process, we engage all impacted by the criminal activity to develop meaningful, and FASD informed, transition to their community of release. Individuals who have FASD are overrepresented in the CJS. Traditional punitive penalties for individuals impacted by FASD have proven unsuccessful as a means of successful rehabilitation and at reducing recidivism.
Additionally, individuals impacted by FASD experience a high incidence of addiction and mental health issues, resulting in homelessness, relationship breakdown, relationship violence, health related issues, and subsequent involvement with the CJS. Restorative Practices principles and Restorative Justice coupled with Transitional Mentorship are an integral component to a successful reintegration to community.
